WHAT IS TRAUMA?

When we hurt, we can experience this internally, for example with negative thoughts about ourselves and the world, symptoms related to trauma, or uncomfortable feelings. Hurt people also hurt people in that sometimes people act out towards others.

We explain trauma as an incident in our past, which impacts our present. Sometimes we don’t know why we act, feel, and think the way we do in the present, and those parts of us are likely being impacted by something that occurred in our past. There is what we call “Big T trauma” and little “t trauma.” Big T trauma is a single, major event, like a one-time assault. Little t trauma is ongoing or developmental trauma that may not seem as “major,” but it goes on and on and on, like a parent calling a child “a piece of shit” or telling them “you won’t amount to anything” each time they don’t get an A in school.
