Types of Talk Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive therapies assume that the individual has developed irrational cognitive processes that have been learned, reinforced, and therefore, maintained. In CBT, these are challenged directly. By replacing our thinking and behavior patterns that are harmful to us with more accurate thoughts and functional behaviors, we can focus on our problems, how to solve them, and improve our overall well-being.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

An adaptation of CBT, DBT addresses impulse control and emotional regulation. In DBT, individuals learn specific techniques via social skills training and psychoeducation. DBT validates the individual's experiences, while offering and negotiating new skills and adaptive behaviors that are more appropriate for a given situation.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

IPT is usually a more short-term form of talk therapy. It is used when individuals are exhibiting underlying interpersonal issues. Perhaps they have problems with a coworker, with their significant other, or with interpersonal relationships in general. It is used to help with interpersonal conflict as well as unresolved grief. IPT helps individuals learn how to express emotions and communicate effectively.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy involves the interpretation of mental/emotional processes to better understand how the individual functions in day-to-day life. Individuals use self-reflection and self-awareness to identify and assess unconscious behaviors and reactions that are impeding functionality and growth. It asks the question, what happened in the past that is still affecting you today?

Supportive Therapy

Supportive therapy seeks to improve self-esteem and adaptive skills. it takes into account specific limitations that individuals may be experiencing such as personality issues, defense mechanisms, and problems related to life circumstances (e.g., education level, socioeconomic status, identities, social support systems). Supportive therapy preserves the authority and autonomy of the individual and helps them to develop their own resources for improvement.

Group Therapy

Group therapy allows individuals to connect with others who are dealing with similar circumstances and issues. Social interaction is a major mart of the human experience; therefore, group therapy can provide solace for individuals who may feel like they are alone in their experience. there is immense power in a group setting...one that provides understanding, answers, and connection in a nonjudgemental space.
